The John Fisher Hose Company named for La Junta's first Postmaster (John Fisher) the organization is currently Colorado's oldest chartered Volunteer Fire Organization. The John Fisher Hose company started in 1883 with 22 members and a horse drawn fire cart. The volunteers are used to supplement the paid members of the La Junta Fire Department and the La Junta Rural Fire Protection District. Today there are 32 members of the organization. A majority of the volunteers serve as Fire Fighters and Emergency Medical Technicians.
